"Oh great, another onesie." Here are some better gift ideas for people on your holiday list who are having a baby.
I'm sure you know someone who's having a baby soon. Your neighbor? Your daughter? Your co-worker? Have you been eyeing the holiday baby clothes? I know, it's hard to resist the cuteness. Have you seen the little elf outfits and the red party dresses? The onesies with clever holiday puns? Ridiculously adorable.
Do you know how many newborn onesies a newborn actually needs? Not many. Maybe seven, maybe eleven. Most babies grow out of newborn sizes in a week or two anyway, and most parents end up with way more newborn clothes than they will ever dress their little one in.
If you've got expectant parents in your life, here are three holiday gifts that really show you care, and can have a lasting effect on their wellbeing, and the wellbeing of the new baby.
1. Organize a Meal Train for them. This is such a simple thing, but it is so helpful for new parents to not have to think about preparing food. Even if you live far away from them, a meal train is simple to set up online, and it doesn't cost a dime!
2. Purchase professional postpartum support for them. Hands-on practical and emotional support in the home makes a huge difference in how parents cope with caring for a newborn. With our busy lives and scattered family networks, it is rare that family members can offer this kind of presence for more than a few days. Check out our holiday gift packs--each one is a great deal, packed with a variety of support for new parents.
Out of your budget for a holiday gift? Pool together your resources with other friends and relatives of the expectant parents and really let them know they are surrounded in a net of love and support. We are happy to work with multiple parties who would like to purchase a gift pack together.
3. Give them gift certificates to restaurants in their area that deliver, or to a laundry/diaper service, or to a housecleaning service. Taking care of a new baby is more than a full-time job. Let them know that you support them as parents by sharing the load with them in whatever way you can.
